CLUBS
Lochee PS Skipping Club - Thursday afternoons 3.25-4.15pm
(in Gym Hall) Skipping is a
really fun way to keep fit so we decided to start our very
own skipping club here at Lochee Primary School. Run by Mr
Brown, the club is open to all P5-7 pupils and gives them
the chance to learn new moves on an individual rope,
'jump-in' on a large turning rope, or even do double-dutch!
And of course we teach them skipping songs and rhymes which
add to the fun. Lochee
Lunchtime TOP Sport Club - Wednesday lunchtimes 12.30-1.10
(in Gym Hall) This club
gives pupils from P4 and P5 the chance to learn skills in a
different sport each term. Term 1 offers hockey, and during
the rest of the school year, pupils will have the
opportunity to play cricket, tennis and athletics with fun
and easy to use equipment.
OUTDOORS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Primary 6 pupils visit Menzieshill High School for swimming
lessons.
Our own school playground and gym hall are used for a wide
variety of sports and games.
Health wise, the school has benefited from the enthusiasm of
the active School Co-coordinator who has promoting exercise
not only for healthy bodies but also for healthy minds.
Various clubs now meet after school for promoting activities
such as, Athletics, Karate and Basketball, which has also
been a strong feature of the school for the upper classes:
they have matches with other schools and often feature among
the winners of bigger competitions. Pupils from P6 and
P7 represent this part this part of Dundee in an indoor
athletics competition for the whole of the city.
The Book Club continues to run and is largely supported by
the pupils in the younger classes. Extra books are earned by
the amount spent and these go into the school library or
class libraries as appropriate.
Lochee Primary School took part in the World’s Biggest
Coffee Morning, in aid of McMillan Cancer Care for the
fourth successive year and have raised more money again than
they have done formerly.
Once again
the school was delighted to welcome staff and students from
Norway and from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
ICT
Lochee Primary School has its own computer suite housing 10
PCs and an interactive Prometheon Board. These computers are
networked not only with others around the school, but as
part of a Dundee-wide schools intranet. Core software is
provided by Dundee Authority and is child friendly, enabling
the teaching of the basics to be fun and motivating.
Class teachers at Lochee are
time-tabled to allow them to bring along their pupils to the
computer suite on a regular basis. Here the children can
explore the ICT curriculum, which covers six strands:
-Using the technology
-Creating and presenting
-Collecting and analysing
-Communicating and
collaborating
-Controlling and modelling
-Developing informed attitudes
As with the other curricular
areas, pupils progress through level A towards level E as
the move through the primary school.
In addition to the provided
core hardware and software, Lochee Computer Suite has a
range of additional devices such as scanners,
QX3 microscopes and Robolab kits, which can be used within
ICT or to support the wider curriculum. There is also a
library of CD-ROMs. However it is the internet with its vast
range of resources and learning opportunities which is
becoming increasingly important and the computer suite is a
valuable gateway to this resource for both teachers and
pupils.
LIBRARY
The aim of our school library is to encourage our children to read. We have
approximately 10,300 books and we continually update and add to our collection. The library is split into fiction - infant and upper-and non-fiction which can be used as a reference source of projects. Each class has a time to come, browse and choose a book to be scanned out in their name. The borrowing period is one week but can be re-issued each week. Our parents` co-operation is a must in supervising the care of and return of books and we do appreciate this.
The library is as it is now only with the help of many people over a considerable time and we are very grateful for all their help.
MUSIC
& TV ROOM Our Music
Specialist visits once a fortnight. Pupils visit the music
room for the lessons. As well as a piano we have a wide
range of musical instruments available. Class Teachers also
use this room to develop the lessons taught by the
specialist teacher. Some children also undertake brass
instrumental tuition once a week. This
room is also used as a TV room visited regularly by all
classes in which the children are shown educational videos.
