CURRICULUM
In November 1987 the Secretary of State for Scotland issued
a Consultation Paper “Curriculum and Assessment in Scotland:
A Policy for the 90’s” This document set out a range of
proposals which formed the basis of the 5 – 14 Development
Programme in accordance with Dundee City Council’s
recommendations on the phased introduction of the 5 – 14
curriculum guidelines. These guidelines cover: -
English
Language including the Scottish Dimension
Mathematics
Environmental Studies
Expressive Arts
Religious and Moral Education
Personal and Social Development
Cross-curriculum Issues
The 5 – 14 Development Programme also offer advice to
schools on: -
Assessment
National Testing
Recording and Reporting
The aims of the 5 – 14 Development Programme are as
follows: -
That school work should be planned in such a way that each
pupil is given work which is stimulating, challenging but
attainable and which leads to a progressive and continuous
growth in knowledge and skills and the development of
desirable attributes and personal qualities.
Parents should be informed of the progress of pupils who are
being systematically assessed and should receive appropriate
information about their progress.
That schools and teachers should be provided with the advice
and support necessary to carry forward these aspects of
their professional duties.
Organisation in the classroom takes account of the
individual needs and abilities of the children. Usually the
children work in groups but class and individual teaching
are employed where appropriate. Within this type of
structure, children who have difficulties both long and
short term and children, who display special aptitudes, can
experience learning at an appropriate level.
Parents may find the curriculum and organisation different
to their own school days but we like to think we have
retained the relevant traditional skills and values
alongside the most effective and equally relevant modern
practices. There are many changes taking place at National,
Regional and School level at present which will most likely
affect the organisation of the school. You will be informed
of these changes by the school and the media but please feel
free to contact the school for answers to any questions you
may have.
